What's it good for?
Nettle leaf, our favorite herb, is the most nutrient dense plant in the world.
Nettle is found widely throughout North America and Europe, where it grows abundantly as a weed.
The leaves and stems are covered with stinging hairs or tricomes, thus the name stinging nettle.
Traditionally valued as an herbal panacea, nettle has been used as a food and herbal remedy for thousands of years.
Containing a wide spectrum of highly absorbable vitamins and minerals, nettle leaf supports a healthy immune system and balances inflammatory response.
The fresh plant extract possesses an antihistamine-like effect, while tonifying and firming inflamed tissues.
In the late 1980s, scientists studying the differences between dried and freeze dried herbs accidentally discovered that freeze dried nettles cured one of the researcher’s hay fever.
Subsequently, a randomized double-blind study showed that 58 percent of hay-fever sufferers given freeze-dried nettles rated it moderately to highly effective.
The author notes his own experience with stinging nettles ~ if suffering from hayfever, gently sting the back of the hand to stop the allergy within a few minutes.
As a lung tonic nettles has been used for asthma, mucus conditions of the lungs, and chronic coughs.
Thyme has antispasmodic, mucus-clearing, and antibacterial properties.
Thyme contains an essential oil called thymol, and certain flavonoids.
This plant has antispasmodic, expectorant (mucus expelling), and antibacterial actions, and it is considered helpful in cases of bronchitis.
Licorice root has been used in both Eastern and Western medicine to treat a variety of illnesses ranging from the common cold to liver disease.
It acts as a demulcent, a soothing, coating agent, and as an expectorant, meaning it helps get rid of phlegm.
Mullein is an expectorant, which means it helps the body expel excess mucus, usually by helping make your coughs more productive, to bring up mucus that may be settling in the chest or in the throat.
It is also a demulcent. Studies show that demulcents create a soothing anti-inflammatory coating over mucous membrane
